STAFF BIO:

Leigh Cowlishaw serves as Richmond United’s Director of Soccer, bringing more than 35 years of elite playing, coaching, and leadership experience across both the professional and youth levels. A former English footballer, Cowlishaw began his career with Everton FC at age 15 before making his professional debut with Burton Albion at 18.

He became a cornerstone of the Richmond soccer community through his long-standing involvement with the Richmond Kickers, dating back to the club’s inaugural season in 1993. As a player, Cowlishaw made 152 appearances and scored 20 goals, playing a key role in the club’s historic 1995 season that saw them capture both the USL Championship and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Following his playing career, Cowlishaw transitioned into coaching, serving as Head Coach of the Richmond Kickers from 2000 to 2018. During that time, he became one of the most successful coaches in USL history, leading the team to five championships, six finals appearances, and 276 victories while establishing a culture of sustained excellence.

He later served as Executive Director of Soccer for the Richmond Kickers Youth Club, where he helped guide the development of one of the region’s premier youth programs. In addition, Cowlishaw has contributed to the broader growth of the game as a member of the USL Board of Governors.

A highly accomplished player at the collegiate level, Cowlishaw starred at the University of Richmond, where he was named CAA Player of the Year, earned All-American honors, and became the program’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and points. He was inducted into both the University of Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame and the USL Hall of Fame, and he holds a prestigious USSF “A” License.

Cowlishaw’s impact on the game—both locally and nationally—continues to shape the next generation of players and coaches within Richmond United.
